Material Circularity Index (MCI)

The MCI is based on two factors, the linear flow index (LFI) and the utility factor. The LFI calculated the circularity of a product analysing, the share of reused, recycled or sustainable biological materials as input and the recycled, reused or composted share as output. The utility factor is calculated based on the expected life span of the product compared to the average product life span.

We need to know the following to be able to calculate the MCI:

• the share of reused materials

• the share of recycled materials

• the share of sustainable biological materials

• recycling rate [%]

• Efficiency of recycling [%]

• rate of biological material meeting criteria for energy recovery [%]

• efficiency energy recovery

• Industry average lifetime

• Product lifetime
